Sanzou Bespoke American Mahjong Set

A mountain landscape waits beneath a midnight-blue sky.

Across Sanzou’s hand-painted Assam teak case, pale peaks rise behind flowering pink trees. A small pavilion rests among the rocks, while a single butterfly crosses the quiet ivory foreground. The deep blue sky gives the delicate scene its drama; gleaming brass corners, clasps, and a sculptural handle frame it like a treasured painting.

Open the case and the colors take an unexpected turn. Rose-colored cotton velvet surrounds rows of soft lavender tiles. Their small painted symbols bring blue, coral, green, and pink into the palette, while pale peach racks add warmth when the game moves to the table. Sanzou is serene at first glance, then wonderfully vivid in the hand.

Look closely at the tiles. The dot suit gathers its circles into floral patterns; fine strokes mark the bamboo suit. Blue and coral lotus flowers appear throughout, and botanical jokers echo the blossoms on the case. The symbols remain clear for American mahjong play, with details that invite a second look between hands.

This is what more than 500 hours of work by nine Jaipur artisans makes possible. Trained in Rajasthan’s miniature painting tradition, the artists transfer the designs through pinholing, build the colors in layers, and add the final details by hand. Each tile is made from Assam teak and lacquered for play. The case is painted to be admired in its own right, then lined to protect the set within.

Sanzou is made to order, and the touch of the artisans’ hands means no two sets will be exactly alike. Commission it for the pleasure of playing now—and for the possibility that, years from now, someone will open that same case and remember whose table it graced.
