Sakura Bespoke American Mahjong Set

A pink mountain rises through the clouds.

Across Sakura’s pale hand-painted Assam teak lid, ribbons of rose and blue sweep into a dramatic peak. Flowering trees lean over the landscape, their branches framing a small pavilion tucked among the hills. The eye travels from the winding foreground to the distant blue clouds and back again, finding another painted detail each time. Gleaming brass corners, clasps, and a sculptural handle finish the case like a treasured keepsake.

Open it, and the landscape’s pink returns in a more intimate form. Deep rose cotton velvet lines the lid and cushions rows of ivory-toned tiles. Their pale pink edges echo the painted mountain, while green, blue, and blush markings lend the orderly rows a delicate play of color. Even before a hand begins, the open case feels like part of the occasion.

The tiles invite a closer look. The dot suit forms little clusters and rings of pink, green, and blue; fine green strokes distinguish the bamboo tiles. Painted character symbols stand out clearly against the ivory faces. Flowers, dragons, and circular joker motifs add further moments of discovery, each carrying the palette of Sakura’s case onto the table. The artwork is detailed enough to admire between turns and clear enough for American mahjong play.

This is what more than 500 hours of work by nine Jaipur artisans makes possible. Trained in Rajasthan’s miniature painting tradition, the artists transfer the designs through pinholing, build the colors in layers, and add the final details by hand. Each tile is made from Assam teak and lacquered for play. The case is painted to be admired in its own right, then lined to protect the set within.

Sakura is made to order, and the touch of the artisans’ hands means no two sets will be exactly alike. Commission it for the pleasure of playing now—and for the possibility that, years from now, someone will open that same case and remember whose table it graced.
