Kachoe Bespoke American Mahjong Set

A garden takes flight across the lid.

Against Kachoe’s luminous blue-green case, tiny hummingbirds hover among sweeping dark leaves and pink blossoms. One pauses at a flower; another appears to dart toward the edge of the painted scene. The delicate wings and curling petals give the hand-painted Assam teak case the feeling of a moment caught just before it disappears. Brass corners, clasps, and a sculptural handle catch the light around it.

Open the case and the garden gives way to a deeper shade of blue-green. Soft cotton velvet lines the lid and surrounds rows of green-toned tiles, their painted faces bringing little flashes of pink, yellow, turquoise, and cobalt into view. The color feels cool and serene, while the abundance of hand-painted detail invites you to linger before setting the table.

The tiles carry Kachoe’s rhythm into play. Concentric circles bloom across the dot suit in rings of blue, pink, and yellow. Fine, upright strokes mark the bamboo tiles, while the character suit adds contrasting painted symbols. Look closer and you find botanical flourishes among the flowers and jokers, each one a small echo of the painted lid. The symbols remain legible for American mahjong, with details that reward a second glance.

This is what more than 500 hours of work by nine Jaipur artisans makes possible. Trained in Rajasthan’s miniature painting tradition, the artists transfer the designs through pinholing, build the colors in layers, and add the final details by hand. Each tile is made from Assam teak and lacquered for play. The case is painted to be admired in its own right, then lined to protect the set within.

Kachoe is made to order, and the touch of the artisans’ hands means no two sets will be exactly alike. Commission it for the pleasure of playing now—and for the possibility that, years from now, someone will open that same case and remember whose table it graced.
