Ikigai Bespoke American Mahjong Set

Two birds have found their place among the flowers.

On Ikigai’s softly painted Assam teak lid, flowering branches climb through a garden of pale pink, cream, and muted green. One bird rests among the blossoms while another perches lower in the foliage, their delicate colors drawing the eye across the scene. Brass corners, clasps, and a sculptural handle frame the case, giving this intimate painted garden the presence of an object meant to be kept.

Inside, the palette becomes richer. Rose-colored cotton velvet lines the case and surrounds rows of blush-pink tiles. A soft green rack brings out the green in the painted lid, while small touches of coral, cream, and blue brighten the tile faces. Opening Ikigai feels like stepping closer to the garden: the scene on the lid gives way to details small enough to hold in your hand.

Those details bring a playful spirit to the table. The dot suit gathers warm-colored circles into precise little patterns, and fine painted strokes distinguish the bamboo tiles. Lotus flowers appear in red and pale blue; expressive illustrated tiles and softly colored jokers invite another look between turns. The symbols remain clear for American mahjong play, while the hand-painted palette gives each row its own quiet charm.

This is what more than 500 hours of work by nine Jaipur artisans makes possible. Trained in Rajasthan’s miniature painting tradition, the artists transfer the designs through pinholing, build the colors in layers, and add the final details by hand. Each tile is made from Assam teak and lacquered for play. The case is painted to be admired in its own right, then lined to protect the set within.

Ikigai is made to order, and the touch of the artisans’ hands means no two sets will be exactly alike. Commission it for the pleasure of playing now—and for the possibility that, years from now, someone will open that same case and remember whose table it graced.
