Akina Bespoke American Mahjong Set

A whole landscape is held inside the smallest of frames.

At the center of Akina’s ivory-colored case, mountains rise in vivid turquoise and blue above a winding stretch of water. Cobalt trees and a flash of orange foliage surround a small white pavilion. A fine gold border leaves the hand-painted scene room to command your attention, while brass corners, clasps, and a sculptural handle give the Assam teak case its finishing touches.

Lift the lid and warmth takes over. Rich rust-colored cotton velvet lines the case, setting off rows of ivory-toned tiles. Four coordinating racks bring Akina’s carefully composed palette to the table. The quiet expanse of the closed case gives way to a wonderfully detailed collection within.

On the tiles, blue, coral, and green circles form flower-like patterns across the dot suit. Slender painted stems animate the bamboo suit. Blue and red lotus flowers, leafy jokers, and richly colored symbols offer something new to notice as the tiles pass through your hands. The designs remain clear for American mahjong play, while their painted details make every round a pleasure to linger over.

This is what more than 500 hours of work by nine Jaipur artisans makes possible. Trained in Rajasthan’s miniature painting tradition, the artists transfer the designs through pinholing, build the colors in layers, and add the final details by hand. Each tile is made from Assam teak and lacquered for play. The case is painted to be admired in its own right, then lined to protect the set within.

Akina is made to order, and the touch of the artisans’ hands means no two sets will be exactly alike. Commission it for the pleasure of playing now—and for the possibility that, years from now, someone will open that same case and remember whose table it graced.
