Shizuka Bespoke American Mahjong Set

The sun hangs low over a world painted entirely for Shizuka.

Across the pale Assam teak lid, a warm orange sun glows above mist-wrapped mountains. A slender bridge crosses the landscape beneath flowering trees, their branches carrying touches of coral, pink, and cream into the foreground. The scene unfolds from one end of the case to the other, inviting the eye to wander through it before the first clasp is opened. Brass corners and a graceful handle lend a final glint to the painted view.

Inside, the landscape’s warmth gives way to a rich copper-brown velvet lining. Rows of soft green tiles rest against it, their colors set off by warm wood-toned racks tucked neatly alongside. There is a lovely sense of ceremony in the contrast: the sweeping vista on the lid, then this close, orderly world waiting beneath it.

Shizuka’s tiles have a quiet intricacy of their own. The dot suit gathers circles of blue, coral, and green into delicate clusters. Slender bamboo marks are painted in dark blue with small touches of color, while the character tiles carry their symbols in warm red. Flowers and trees bring brighter accents to the green tile faces, and botanical jokers offer another detail to discover between hands. The designs are clear for American mahjong play and beautiful to linger over.

This is what more than 500 hours of work by nine Jaipur artisans makes possible. Trained in Rajasthan’s miniature painting tradition, the artists transfer the designs through pinholing, build the colors in layers, and add the final details by hand. Each tile is made from Assam teak and lacquered for play. The case is painted to be admired in its own right, then lined to protect the set within.

Shizuka is made to order, and the touch of the artisans’ hands means no two sets will be exactly alike. Commission it for the pleasure of playing now—and for the possibility that, years from now, someone will open that same case and remember whose table it graced.
