Kano Bespoke American Mahjong Set

Against a black sky, the architecture seems to emerge from another world.

A painted temple rises across Kano’s deep black lid in fine strokes of red, white, and pale blue. Smaller buildings appear at the opposite edge, leaving a dramatic expanse of darkness between them. A slender border follows the shape of the case, while brass corners, clasps, and a sculptural handle catch the light. The hand-painted Assam teak case is striking even before anyone knows what it holds.

Inside, the mood turns warm. Rust-colored cotton velvet lines the lid and cradles orderly rows of ivory-toned tiles. Four coordinating racks bring the set to the table. Opening Kano feels like moving from a quiet night scene into a gathering already full of life.

The tiles offer discoveries of their own. Blue and coral circles form delicate patterns across the dot suit; fine red and blue strokes distinguish the bamboo tiles. Floral motifs, painted jokers, and expressive dragons bring color to the ivory surface. The symbols remain clear for American mahjong play, but their details invite you to look again each time a tile is drawn.

This is what more than 500 hours of work by nine Jaipur artisans makes possible. Trained in Rajasthan’s miniature painting tradition, the artists transfer the designs through pinholing, build the colors in layers, and add the final details by hand. Each tile is made from Assam teak and lacquered for play. The case is painted to be admired in its own right, then lined to protect the set within.

Kano is made to order, and the touch of the artisans’ hands means no two sets will be exactly alike. Commission it for the pleasure of playing now—and for the possibility that, years from now, someone will open that same case and remember whose table it graced.
