Kaihua Bespoke American Mahjong Set
Description
The invitation begins with the case.
Set Kaihua on the table and take a moment before opening it. The pale, hand-painted Assam teak case is edged in warm wood and finished with gleaming brass corners, clasps, and a sculptural handle. Inside, fine olive-green cotton velvet surrounds rows of ivory-toned tiles. Four dusky rose racks bring the palette out onto the table. Every part of the set feels chosen to belong with the next.
Then the details begin to reveal themselves. The dot tiles arrange their circles into little rosettes of blush, green, and blue. A graceful bird marks the one bam; fine stems and leaves animate the bamboo suit. Lotus flowers, expressive dragons, and painted jokers add moments of discovery between hands. Kaihua has the clarity an American mahjong player needs, with artwork that makes you want to pick up each tile and look again.
This is what more than 500 hours of work by nine Jaipur artisans makes possible. Trained in Rajasthan’s miniature painting tradition, the artists transfer the designs through pinholing, build the colors in layers, and add the final details by hand. Each tile is made from Assam teak and lacquered for play. The case is painted to be admired in its own right, then lined to protect the set within.
Kaihua is made to order, and the touch of the artisans’ hands means no two sets will be exactly alike. Commission it for the pleasure of playing now—and for the possibility that, years from now, someone will open that same case and remember whose table it graced.

A Note on the Tiles
The symbols and designs shown are standard across our American mahjong collection. For Kaihua, they are hand-painted in a distinctive palette coordinated with the case and racks shown throughout this listing.
As every tile is painted and finished by hand, subtle variations are a natural signature of the artisan’s work.
Experience the Craftsmanship
The character of hand-finished teak—its weight, warmth and beautifully smooth surface—is best appreciated in the hand.
