Painted clouds curl at the opposite corner, leaving a bold sweep of open color between them. The hand-painted Assam teak case is finished with gleaming brass corners, clasps, and a sculptural handle. It has the presence of an artwork before the first tile is seen.

Open the case and deep navy cotton velvet sets off rows of ivory-toned tiles. Four coordinating navy racks carry that rich color onto the table. The contrast between the terracotta exterior and blue interior gives Huangma another moment of drama as the game begins.

The tiles bring their own intricate rhythm. The dot suit gathers blue and rust-colored circles into patterned clusters, while the bamboo suit is painted in fine strokes of blue, green, and red. Expressive motifs appear among the flowers, dragons, and jokers. Each tile is clear for American mahjong play, yet detailed enough to make a player pause before placing it on the rack.

This is what more than 500 hours of work by nine Jaipur artisans makes possible. Trained in Rajasthan’s miniature painting tradition, the artists transfer the designs through pinholing, build the colors in layers, and add the final details by hand. Each tile is made from Assam teak and lacquered for play. The case is painted to be admired in its own right, then lined to protect the set within.

Huangma is made to order, and the touch of the artisans’ hands means no two sets will be exactly alike. Commission it for the pleasure of playing now—and for the possibility that, years from now, someone will open that same case and remember whose table it graced.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0663/8161/1070/files/24026858-35c2-4bae-9948-5d753fe96b37.jpg?v=1790615132
