The scene feels caught at the exact moment winter gives way: delicate, fleeting, and impossible to hurry past. Painted by hand on Assam teak, the case is finished with gleaming brass fittings and a sculptural handle.

Open it, and the softness turns sumptuous. Deep rose cotton velvet surrounds rows of blush-colored tiles, their painted details touched with green, coral, and red. Four coordinating racks carry Hatsu’s gentle palette onto the table. It is a lovely surprise after the serenity of the landscape outside.

The details invite another look. Circles bloom into intricate patterns across the dot tiles, while slender green stems mark the bamboo suit. Vivid red lotus flowers appear among the tiles, and botanical jokers bring a playful note to the collection. The symbols remain clear for American mahjong play, but each painted tile offers its own small moment of pleasure.

This is what more than 500 hours of work by nine Jaipur artisans makes possible. Trained in Rajasthan’s miniature painting tradition, the artists transfer the designs through pinholing, build the colors in layers, and add the final details by hand. Each tile is made from Assam teak and lacquered for play. The case is painted to be admired in its own right, then lined to protect the set within.

Hatsu is made to order, and the touch of the artisans’ hands means no two sets will be exactly alike. Commission it for the pleasure of playing now—and for the possibility that, years from now, someone will open that same case and remember whose table it graced.
